National Vegetation Classification Survey (NVC)

The National Vegetation Classification (NVC) is one of the most detailed systems used across the UK to describe and classify plant communities. NVC surveys provide a comprehensive understanding of vegetation composition, allowing habitats to be accurately interpreted for ecological assessment, planning, conservation, and land management. NVC surveys are particularly valuable for identifying and understanding habitats of high ecological importance including Priority Habitats, Annex I habitats, and Irreplaceable Habitats.

Serotina Ecology provides specialist botanical and NVC surveys to identify and map vegetation communities, supporting robust ecological decision-making for development, restoration, and habitat management projects.

Surveys typically include

  • Quadrat-based botanical recording

  • Identification and assignment of NVC communities

  • Mapping of vegetation communities across the site

  • Habitat condition assessment where required

  • Interpretation of plant communities for planning and ecological reporting

Typical uses

  • Planning and Ecological Impact Assessment

  • Biodiversity Net Gain baseline surveys

  • Protected site assessment

  • Habitat restoration and conservation management

  • Ecological monitoring and long-term vegetation studies.
